From London fine art school to baroque luthier in Toulouse
After completing my bachelor degree in fine art painting at Camberwell College of Arts, London in 2013, I enrolled in the musical instrument making course at West Dean College, Sussex. There, I learnt the craft of instrument making and began my specialisation in the making of the viola da gamba. During my three years at West Dean I learnt woodworking skills that I use to this day as well as construction techniques that are unique to the viol.
Under the direction of Shem Mackey, we were taught construction methods used during the 17th and 18th century and we studied instrument that exist in museums to have first hand access to original examples of viols. During each academic year we would make study trips abroad and spend a week observing instruments in museums discovering first hand the making techniques of the baroque period. The observations we made had a direct influence on the instruments we would make in the following years at college and this approach had an enormous influence on my making approach today.
After graduating in 2017, I found full time work at Bridgewood and Nietzert, London, where for 7 years, I worked in their workshop repairing instruments. Here I worked on fine old instruments and learnt extensive instrument repair as well as fine tuning instruments for sound optimisation.
In 2024 I moved to Toulouse, France and have worked here predominantly making viols and establishing myself as a baroque luthier.
Hobbies of mine include climbing and photography.
